Chapter Fourteen

The Secret Cove

Olive’s stomach churned as she stood outside of Luigi’s waiting for Gabby to arrive. When Gabby had invited her to Sunday dinner with the Pacelli clan, Olive had happily agreed. The Italian family must have been growing on her. She needed to do one thing first, though, and that was tell Gabby the truth about last year. They were becoming friends, and Olive liked her too much to keep something that big a secret.

Olive took a deep, shaky breath. This wouldn’t be easy. Gabby had made it clear that she despised the person who’d ratted on her. What if she told her to go to hell and stick her friendship where the sun don’t shine? Then again, maybe that would be for the best since they were rivals. But no. Olive didn’t like that option one bit. The thought of never seeing Gabby again was disheartening. Olive could only hope that her well-prepared speech would convince Gabby to forgive her. She’d stood in front of the mirror and practiced it for an hour. She couldn’t have been any more prepared.

Olive closed her eyes and leaned back against the cool brick wall of the restaurant. If anyone had told her just a few weeks ago that she’d be friends with the Italian Stallion, she’d have thought they were insane. Yet here she was, desiring the companionship of someone she cared about far more than she wanted to admit.

“Hey.”

Olive’s eyes popped open, her pulse racing at the sight of Gabby just inches away. You can do this. Just recite what you practiced a gazillion times.

“What are you doing out here?”

“I…uhh…” This was so much easier when Olive was looking at her reflection in the mirror instead of the real-life, flesh-and-blood Gabby.

“Are you okay?” Gabby placed a hand on Olive’s arm, her caramel eyes dripping with concern. Apparently, she wasn’t going to make this easy by being attentive and caring. Why couldn’t her annoying side rear its head about now?

Olive blurted out, much too loud and forcefully, “I need to tell you something.”

“Okaaay…”

Olive filled her lungs with air, let it out slowly, and gulped.

“It can’t be that bad,” Gabby said with a nervous chuckle.

I just hope you still think that after I spill my guts.

“This is something that―”

“Hey, you two,” Gina said as she joined them. “The party is inside.”

Olive sighed. Bridezilla had the worst timing ever.

“Party?” Gabby asked. “What’s this dinner about anyway?”

Gina pursed her lips and appeared to be irritated and mischievous at the same time.

“Come on, Gina. What gives?”

Gina silently shook her head, with a slight grin and a flash of anger in her eyes. “Don’t keep Mamma waiting,” Gina said as she entered the restaurant.

“What was that about?” Olive asked.

“No idea, but I guess we should find out.” Gabby placed her hand on Olive’s back and guided her toward the door. “Oh, wait. You were going to tell me something.”

“I’ll…uhh…I’ll tell you later.” Olive wasn’t chickening out…or at least that’s what she told herself. What Gina had said was true.
